Jane Long, an Australian artist, takes photos taken by the Romanian photographer, Costica Acsinte, and turns them into bright, whimsical pictures. The original pictures were taken during World War I, when smiling in pictures wasn't a common practice, considering a person would have to sit perfectly still for about five minutes. Have you tried to smile consistently for five minutes? It's an uncomfortable experience. Long adds color, props, and a touch of magic to all of her recreations. These photos were originally devoid of life and personality, but I think Long's recreations are inspired and redeem the originals in a way. The surreal aspect of the pictures is what caught my attention. I love old pictures from the late 1800's to early 1900's, and seeing them like this is almost eye-opening. Maybe one day, I could do interesting things like this. I could potentially make something grey and flat, like these old pictures, lively and dynamic.
